Millicente
Millicente dashes through the halls of Fetherbane Academy, flinching at each clop her shoes make on the tiled floor. Of all days to wake up late. She had been doing so well, setting her alarm clock every night, completing most of her homework, taking notes in class (though she can barely read them later).
And now, on the most important day, when they pick their teams for the year to complete quests, she had to go and sleep through her alarm. She and Nedda had promised each other that they would be on the same team, and she doubts that Ms. Yael would care for them to honor that promise with one of them being late. The only thing Millicente can do now is hope that whatever spot is left is on Nedda’s team.
Her footsteps slow as she reaches her classroom door. Millicente stops and listens. Ms. Yael is giving a lecture on quests it seems, which means they’re definitely done picking teams. Millicente takes a deep breath and slowly opens the door.
Ms. Yael is currently turned, writing something on the chalkboard. Millicente takes the chance to scan the room and see where she should go. She immediately looks for Nedda who, unfortunately, is already in a team with three people. Nedda catches her eye and mouths “Sorry” before pointing.
Millicente follow her finger to the only team with two people, Ikana and Taxson, a sea elf and an air genasi. They’re the quiet kids of the class and definitely wouldn’t have been Millicente’s first pick, but maybe she can see about switching teams later. For now, Ikana waves at her and Millicente creeps over, meshing into the class as if she’s been there all day.
Taxson takes the briefest look from his notebook to Millicente before going back to scribbling notes.
“You’re late,” is all he says.
“Thanks, I hadn’t noticed.” Taxson always annoyed her. It seems like he doesn’t talk unless he can be a smartass. It doesn’t help that he’s a stupid rich boy who probably never has to work a day in his life. Adventuring is probably just a hobby for him. Meanwhile, for Millicente, it’s literally life or death.
She turns to Ikana, who she likes much more, though she still doesn’t want to be on their team. There’s nothing wrong with them exactly. It’s just that they’re so kind and sweet and nice and Millicente doesn’t know how to deal with those kind of people.
“What are we talking about?” Millicente asks them.
“Ms. Yael is assigning quests for everyone,” Ikana tells her. “Just simple tasks, finding items she hid around the city.”
“Did our team get our assignment yet?”
“Not quite yet, as we were waiting for you.”
It wasn’t Ikana who spoke. Millicente sighs and looks up to see Ms. Yael facing her, her face stern.
“Nice of you to join us, Miss Hart,” Ms. Yael says. “I hadn’t heard you come in.”
“Almost like I was here the whole time, yeah?” Millicente tries to joke.
“Almost, except for the fact that earlier, there was a team of two, and now you’re a team of three.”
Millicente nods, deciding it’s best to stay silent this time. Ms. Yael isn’t a bad teacher and isn’t even especially mean, but she can be pretty strict about tardiness in her class.
“But since you’re so eager,” Ms. Yael continues, “your team—you, Ikana, and Taxson—will be looking for an ivory flute, carved in the shape of a serpent. I’ve hidden it in the Ruby District.”
“Where is it?” Millicente asks.
“If I told you, then it wouldn’t be a quest,” Ms. Yael says. “Ask around, look for clues. A good adventurer can find an item with almost no starting information.”
Millicente nods, deciding again that the best option here is to be silent. With luck, she won’t even have to search for this particular item if Ms. Yael lets her switch…which, at this rate, doesn’t seem very likely.
Maybe Millicente should go along with the quest, just for this one day. Get to class early tomorrow. Then Ms. Yael will be in a better mood and more likely to let her and Nedda be on the same team.
Thank you for reading! This one is a little different, instead being a solo Dungeons and Dragons solo roleplay with an 1890s-1920s setting. This one will also have multiple narrators to give the idea of a D&D party, so be prepared to meet the others!
